Meet Our Finalists: Whole Surplus
Whole Surplus is a food surplus management system that connects businesses with resources to reduce their food waste. They are 1 of our 12 Finalist Teams who will compete in the upcoming FoodTech Challenge Awards Ceremony. Read more about them below.
What makes your team excited about your idea and food technology?:
Whole Surplus is a unique enterprise that offers a holistic surplus management system and creates financial benefits for its partners while helping the society and the environment. The business model allows different types of organizations to be involved in the partner ecosystem and turn linear food systems into circular ones. Furthermore, the collection of operational data gives the highest level data insight to reduce waste at source and reach 2030 goals as well as creating a great ecosystem for the circular economy.
What is the biggest source of motivation for your team to work on this project?:
Creating a social and environmental value out of surplus food is the biggest motivation for the team. All of the members work with the mindset to value those foods with the highest benefits. A picture of a smiling child with donated foods makes them forget all the tiring days in hard conditions with long hours.
Could you tell us something unique about your team that makes you a strong contender to be in the Top 4 winners?:
The name of the raccoon in the logo is Racoon Hood. He got his habit to collect edible foods from the trash bin and clean it before he eats from his raccoon fellows. He earned his hat from Robin Hood because he loves to share his food with other people. Whole Surplus is looking for the same mindset and culture in all the team members. For instance, even during the COVID 19 outbreak, the team continued donation operations to help more people during these hard conditions. Their ambitions to find holistic solutions to global problems and to reach more people make them deserve to be in Top 4.
Lastly, if you are selected as one of the four winners, how does your team plan to use the prize money?
Next year, we want to improve the quality and the quantity of our team to expand our operations in MENA countries, therefore the funding will be used for hiring new team members in our technology team and expansion operations.
